Belongs together with Ikaria and Fourni in the prefecture of Samos. Its area is 478 square kilometers and its population is about 33.000 inhabitants. Samos is famous for its sweet wine, it's sight seeings and it's figures provided in the Hellenic History such us the mathematician Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus and the astronomer Aristarchus. From neighbouring Turkey, Samos is separated by the Mykali straight which is just 1.300 m wide. In ancient times Samos considered the birthplace of the goddess Hera. The beauties of the island are remarkable. Samos has two mountains, mountain Kerkis (1434m) and mountain Karvounis (1095m). Both provide a green environment which makes both ideal for hiking, and beautiful beaches like Tsamadou Micali, Psili Ammos, Golden Sand, Lemonakia, Kerveli, Poseidonio. Its capital is the city of Samos. Ports on Samos: Vathi, Pythagorion, and Karlovasi Other points are the city of Karlovassi, Pythagorion and Kokkari (the last 2 are the biggest tourist spots on the island.) There are also many traditional villages like Vourliotes, Ampelos, Manolates where there are traditional tavernas and one can taste the local cuisine while enjoying the view of the Aegean Sea. - 1. Iraion Samos. Located three kms west of the Pythagorion and was dedicated to the goddess Hera. Temple of Hera was the largest in Greece, according to Herodotus.
